Buddha images of all sizes are poses line the cliff. They are more easily admired from boats when the water level is high. Viewing the images during the dry season involves an arduous climb up the cliff face or a good pair of binoculars. The low mountain called Akaut Taung is named ‘Akaut’ (meaning tax) as it is believed to have been the place where cargo ships were taxed as they sailed between Upper and Lower Myanmar in ancient times. There are two legends about the origin of the images. One says ships that could not pay the tax were required to carve an image. The other says that in 1784, when the son of King Bodawpaya (r.1782-1819) attacked Mrauk-U, some of his troops carved this image after becoming stranded on their march westwards. However, it is more likely that a devout Buddhist commissioned them, as they seem to have been created by a single master sculptor.
